For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Chrysler Voyager are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Volkswagen Atlas doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

The Chrysler Voyager has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Atlas doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Voyager and the Atlas have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Volkswagen Atlas:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Volkswagen Atlas:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Voyager is 2% to 4.3% less likely to roll over than the Atlas.

Warranty

Chrysler’s powertrain warranty covers the Voyager 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen covers the Atlas. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Atlas ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Voyager’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Atlas’ (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 4 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Voyager’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Voyager’s reliability 18 points higher than the Atlas.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chrysler vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. With 12 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Chrysler higher than Volkswagen.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chrysler vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen With 3 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Chrysler higher than Volkswagen.

Engine

The Voyager’s 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 18 more horsepower (287 vs. 269) than the Atlas’ 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Voyager has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Atlas doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Chrysler Voyager higher (5 out of 10) than the Volkswagen Atlas (4). This means the Voyager produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Atlas every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Chrysler Voyager, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Atlas.

Suspension and Handling

The Voyager has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Atlas’ suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Voyager’s wheelbase is 4.3 inches longer than on the Atlas (121.6 inches vs. 117.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Voyager is 1.3 inches wider in the front and .7 inches wider in the rear than on the Atlas.

Chassis

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Voyager has liquid-filled engine mounts. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The Atlas uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The design of the Chrysler Voyager amounts to more than styling. The Voyager has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .3 Cd. That is lower than the Atlas (.33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Voyager get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Voyager uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Atlas doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Voyager offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Atlas can only carry 7.

The Voyager has 11.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Atlas (165.1 vs. 153.7).

The Voyager has .6 inches more front hip room, 2.3 inches more front shoulder room, 1.4 inches more rear legroom, 6.2 inches more rear hip room, 2.5 inches more rear shoulder room, .4 inches more third row headroom, 2.8 inches more third row legroom, 4.4 inches more third row hip room and 6.3 inches more third row shoulder room than the Atlas.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Voyager’s middle and third row seats recline. The Atlas’ third row seats don’t recline.

The front step up height for the Voyager is 1.7 inches lower than the Atlas (16.3” vs. 18”).

Cargo Capacity

The Voyager’s cargo area provides more volume than the Atlas.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Voyager easier. The Voyager’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 24.3 inches, while the Atlas’ liftover is 29.7 inches.

The Voyager’s cargo area is larger than the Atlas’ in almost every dimension:

The Voyager has standard Stow ’n Go second and third row seats, which fold flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Atlas only has a third row seat which folds into the floor. The Atlas’ second row seat doesn’t fold into the floor and eats up cargo room.

Ergonomics

The Voyager’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Atlas does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Voyager’s standard sliding doors can be opened with less than three inches side clearance. The Atlas’ standard rear swing-out doors are bulky and make loading in tight spots difficult.

The Voyager’s power side sliding doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the van. The Atlas doesn’t offer a power rear door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Voyager has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Atlas only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Chrysler Voyager, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Volkswagen Atlas isn't recommended.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Voyager as the 2017 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Atlas has never been chosen.
